Destination The Gemmi

At 2,350 meters above sea level, the Gemmi is one of the most impressive high plateaus in the Swiss Alps. Nestled between the steep rocky terrain of Valais and the gentle mountain landscapes of the Bernese Oberland, it offers a unique natural setting of extraordinary vastness and beauty.

Since the Middle Ages, the Gemmi Pass has served as a major crossing connecting the Swiss canton of Valais with the canton of Bern. For centuries, pack animals carried wine, salt, cheese, and other goods across the pass, thereby shaping the history of this route steeped in tradition.

With the rise of health tourism in the 19th century, the Gemmi gained even greater significance. Numerous visitors reached Leukerbad via the historic pass route, contributing to the destination’s early development as a tourist destination.

To this day, the Gemmi captivates visitors with its distinctive landscape around Lake Daubensee, impressive views of the surrounding mountains, and an extraordinary variety of recreational activities. Whether hiking, mountaineering, enjoying nature, or winter sports—the Gemmi is a popular destination in every season for those seeking relaxation and active nature lovers alike.

As the gateway to the Pfyn-Finges Nature Park—designated a Nature Park of National Importance in Switzerland—the Gemmi offers the ideal starting point for unforgettable adventures amidst a fascinating Alpine landscape.

The fascination of this special place has remained unbroken for centuries—and continues to inspire generation after generation.
