Saturday, 20 February 2027: Sunnbüel – Lämmerenplatten – Gemmi Lodge 2350

We meet at 14:54 at the Sunnbüel cable car valley station in Kandersteg. The cable car takes us up to the starting point of our snowshoe hike. We set off in the late afternoon.

Daylight fades into dusk as the full moon accompanies us through the alpine winter landscape. We cross the Lämmerenplatten to reach the Gemmi Lodge 2350. After checking into our rooms, we enjoy a well-earned late dinner overlooking the 4,000-metre peaks.

Distance: 8.34 km · ascent 603 m | descent 201 m · approx. 4½ hours of walking.

Sunday, 21 February 2027: Gemmi – Lämmerental – Gemmi circular tour

A generous breakfast buffet and a surprise set the tone for our second day. We then explore the Lämmerental on snowshoes: wide snowfields, striking rock faces and the peaceful winter scenery of the Gemmi.

We are walking through the habitat of bearded vultures and other alpine wildlife. We keep our eyes open as we explore, before our circular route brings us back to the Gemmi.

Distance: 9.6 km · ascent 390 m | descent 390 m · approx. 4½ hours of walking.

Bring your own snacks and drinks for the walk. Afterwards, make your own way home. If returning via Leukerbad, the descent on the Gemmi cable car is included, followed by the bus to Leuk and onward travel by train.

Routes may be adapted to the conditions.

Snowshoe tours up to WT3. Previous experience of snowshoeing and deep snow is required. Moderately steep terrain with short, steeper sections and/or traverses.

You need the fitness to cover 8–10 km and up to 750 metres of ascent and descent per day. The advertised routes involve around 4½ hours of walking on each day.

Single room: On request and subject to availability, supplement CHF 25. If you book a shared double room and no second guest is found, the single-room supplement applies.

Not included: Personal travel costs, other cable car journeys, snacks and drinks, any equipment hire and insurance.

If fewer than 8 people register, a supplement will be proposed. If guests do not agree, the offer will be withdrawn and payments refunded.

You need a complete snowshoe kit: snowshoes, poles, winter clothing and a daypack. Carry an avalanche safety kit with transceiver, shovel and probe. Wear the transceiver on your body and carry the shovel and probe in your backpack.

For the moonlight hike: A headtorch with fresh batteries or a fully charged battery, plus spare batteries.

Towels, duvets, pillows and slippers are provided at the Gemmi Lodge. You do not need a sleeping bag liner. Pack light: the recommended maximum backpack weight is 6–7 kg, including drinks and snacks.

Meeting point: Saturday, 20 February 2027, at 14:54 at the Sunnbüel cable car valley station in Kandersteg. Make your own way there.

Depending on weather and avalanche conditions, the tour may start earlier and the meeting point may move to Leukerbad.

Return journey: Make your own way home after Sunday’s circular tour. If returning via Leukerbad, the descent on the Gemmi cable car is included. From Leukerbad, take the bus to Leuk and continue by train.

Gemmi Lodge 2350: Cosy, comfortable double rooms with shared shower and toilet on the same floor. Late dinner in the panoramic restaurant and a generous breakfast buffet with mountain views. Duvets, pillows, towels and slippers are provided.

Participants are responsible for their own insurance cover. simply.hiking recommends cancellation insurance and patronage of REGA, Air Glaciers or Air Zermatt.
