Learn to assess mountain weather in the field and plan your hikes using the 3×3 method.
Over three days, you combine practical knowledge of mountain meteorology with the proven 3×3 method. Learn to use weather information when planning tours, assess weather patterns along the way and adapt your decisions to current conditions.
Classroom sessions alternate with hikes in the mountains. On the weather divide between Valais and the Bernese Oberland, the Gemmi provides a spectacular outdoor classroom.
Course leader: Roger Oechslin, meteorologist (MSc), hiking guide with a Swiss federal professional qualification (T4), federally qualified adult educator, paragliding instructor and founder of MeteoScout.
With a little luck, you may spot bearded vultures, ibex or chamois. Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Make your own way to the Gemmi by cable car. Meet at Gemmi Lodge 2350 at 13:00. Rooms are available from 13:00.
Welcome, course objectives and an initial review of your knowledge. An interactive introduction to mountain meteorology, forecasts and the 3×3 method. First weather observations around the Gemmi.
Dinner together. An evening theory session on tour planning and assessing the weather for the following day.
Joint weather analysis and tour planning. A full-day mountain hike adapted to the group and conditions, with continuous weather observation and application of the 3×3 method. Packed lunch included.

Review, personal feedback and applying what you have learned to your own tour planning. Course finishes at approximately 15:00, followed by your individual journey home.
Experience on mountain hiking trails up to T3, sure-footedness and a good level of fitness for daily stages with up to 750 metres of ascent and descent.

Price: From CHF 985 per person in a Comfort double room.
If you book a shared double room and no suitable room partner can be found, the single-room supplement will apply. If the room category is no longer available, accommodation will be provided in another available category with the corresponding supplement or reduction.
Single room, subject to availability: CHF 20 per night, CHF 40 in total for 2 nights.
Included: 3 professionally guided course days; 2 nights at Gemmi Lodge 2350 in a Comfort double room with shared bathroom facilities on the same floor; 2 nights’ half board with four-course dinners and a generous breakfast buffet; 2 packed lunches; return journeys on the Gemmi cable car on your arrival and departure days.
Not included: personal travel costs, snacks, drinks, any equipment hire and insurance.
Bring full hiking equipment, including a daypack, high-cut hiking boots with excellent grip, clothing and weather protection for changeable mountain conditions. Bring your personal items for two nights.

Microspikes or lightweight crampons can be hired for two days for CHF 12, subject to availability.

Roger Oechslin is a meteorologist (MSc), hiking guide with a Swiss federal professional qualification (T4), federally qualified adult educator, paragliding instructor and founder of MeteoScout.
As course leader, he combines in-depth expertise with many years of practical mountain experience. He explains weather patterns clearly and practically in the field, helping you assess conditions and make informed decisions for your own tours.
