Assess winter weather, recognise risks and make informed decisions using the 3×3 method.

In winter, weather affects visibility, wind, navigation and the development of the snowpack and avalanche conditions.

Over three days, you combine practical knowledge of winter meteorology with the 3×3 method. Learn to use weather information when planning tours, understand its impact on conditions, terrain and human factors, and turn your observations into sound decisions.

Classroom sessions alternate with snowshoe tours. On the weather divide between Valais and the Bernese Oberland, the Gemmi provides an ideal setting.

Course leader: Roger Oechslin, meteorologist (MSc), hiking guide with a Swiss federal professional qualification (T4), federally qualified adult educator, paragliding instructor and founder of MeteoScout.

A second hiking guide provides additional support from 9 participants.

With a little luck, you may spot bearded vultures, ibex or chamois. Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.
