The Gemmi is a unique Alpine destination at 2,350 meters above sea level, high above Leukerbad. The Gemmi connects the Valais and the Bernese Oberland in a truly impressive way. From Leukerbad, the Gemmi Railway takes you directly to the plateau; on foot, you can follow the spectacular Gemmi Trail through the rock face. From the Bernese side, the pass can be reached via Kandersteg and Sunnbüel.
At an altitude of 2,350 meters, a vast landscape opens up. Lake Daubensee, alpine meadows, and the magnificent panorama define the scene. Location and Access
The Gemmi is an ideal destination for a day trip. From Leukerbad, the Gemmi Railway takes you directly to the plateau in just a few minutes. Those who prefer can hike up to the Gemmi via the historic Gemmi Trail. From the Bernese side, the trail leads through Kandersteg and Sunnbüel across open countryside to Schwarenbach and on to the Gemmi Pass. This route is accessible in both summer and winter and is also suitable as an easy winter hike.
Experience Nature
The Gemmi is a versatile hiking destination. Mountain and alpine trails wind across the plateau and along Lake Dauben, connect to the surrounding peaks, and lead deep into alpine terrain. In the open landscape, every step becomes a panoramic experience. The Lämmerenboden at the foot of the Wildstrubel—an alpine floodplain of national significance—is also part of this impressive natural area. In winter, the plateau transforms into a tranquil snow-covered landscape. Winter hikes, snowshoe tours, and ski tours wind through vast expanses and high peaks. Sledding gets young and old moving, while the cross-country ski trail across the frozen Daubensee creates a stunning backdrop. The crisp mountain air and the winter silence complete the experience. The bearded vulture often circles majestically along the Gemmiwand. Ibex and chamois are also native to this area. In early summer, alpine meadows bloom in vibrant colors, and alpine flora thrives among the rocks and meadows. It is not uncommon to spot the protected edelweiss as well.
